This was a fun read. Particle physics always amazed me. Knowing it takes 5 sigma to ascertain the presence of a particle is insane. I don’t think I can spell my own name to that level of certainty 🫠

Haha true. Before writing this article, I wasn't even aware of what the Sigma rule is. Its been my observation that I am often the first beneficiary of my own work. I always go into a topic thinking I know enough to write an article. But when I start my research, a see the whole thing in a completely different light.

Me too! I learn so much from just trying to write. And what makes it on the page is still a subset of what I learned from the process.

Nicely done, and RIP Peter Higgs! What a cool pioneer, although he would certainly imply otherwise.

I wrote this piece shortly after the discovery took place, and you might really enjoy it: https://discover.hubpages.com/education/higgsboson (I'm a better writer now, but I was pretty plugged in to the physics)

This article is excellent Andrew. Thanks for sharing it with me. It reminds me of Hank Green explaining science. I think the more complex a concept is, the simpler the explanation should be and nothing makes the pill go down easier than humour.

Thanks, Mir! I think you're doing excellent work here. I love when we write about the same things.

Great article, Mir! I really appreciate how you explain things. It's like traveling between words. I had a bit of trouble seeing the equations at first because the system puts them in black on a dark background. I think it's a problem with my graphics settings, though.

Thanks Michael, I am glad you enjoyed this read. And you are right, the system does put the equations in a dark background and at the moment, and the only fix is for the user to turn the dark theme of the app to light in the settings which I think is some inconvenient for the reader. Substack should fix this bug, in the meantime, I think going forward, I may have to upload these equations as images until this problem is resolved.

Book, "Fundamentals":

" The lifetime of a Higgs particle is about 10^-22 seconds, or a tenth of trillionth of a billionth of a seconds." /page 177, by Frank Wilczek/

-------

The Higgs bosons are unstable and cannot be fundamental particles.

Quantum particles do not need the Higgs field to have mass. Quantum particles have internal (intrinsic) spins (integer spin h=1, 2 . . . and half-integer spin ħ=3/2, 5/2, 7/2 . . . ), which give them mass in accordance with their speed.
